| Abe Louise Young visited Harmony |
On May 12th, we were treated to a visit by published poet and journalist Abe Louise Young. She met with the high schoolers and shared some of her poems, as well as some poetry she has helped create with teens throughout America. Ms. Young travels extensively to share her writing and speaking gifts with students from diverse backgrounds. By sharing the stories of her life, she makes room for others to safely share their own. She has even worked with rival gang-members to help them find common ground - helping to forge bonds among groups of kids who have forgotten that many of their goals are the same - to love and be loved, to feel safe, and to become educated without the threat of violence. Ms. Young spent time speaking to our students about her writing process, about getting published and about the realities of life as an author. Our students gave her a warm welcome and did some writing of their own.

Harmony Excels at Creativity Problem solving and creativity are at the heart of both art and science. At Harmony Science Academy Austin, students prove they have what it takes to be successful at both. The eleventh and twelfth grade art classes have just completed a printmaking self portrait. This involved drawing and then carving their image into a linoleum block. They then inked and printed the block by hand. Click on the art class link to view their finished projects!
